Home Gardening Lettuce - US UofA Division of Agriculture [20--?]

Lettuce is native to Southern Europe and Western Asia. It descended from wild lettuce latica scariola, a common weed of roadsides and wastelands in both the Old and New Worlds. It is a leafy green vegetable of great antiquity. Lettuce is now an important commercial crop, with several hundred different cultivars being grown. There are five distinct types of lettuce - leaf (also known as loose-leaf), Cos or romaine, crisphead, butterhead and stem (also called asparagus lettuce or celtuce).
